April 7

Today in science class, students in science 8 learned that sometimes genetics doesn’t play by simple dominant and recessive rules. Students watched a video about sickle cell anemia, and learned that to be a heterozygote with the sickle cell and the normal blood trait gives you some resistance to malaria. We learned that codominance is when both alleles are dominant, and equally and fully express in the offspring. For example, a flower that has codominant color might have a red and white allele, and that would make it have red and white petals.

Students in integrated science today practiced balancing equations again and have a worksheet for homework. Then we learned the evidence that may show a chemical reaction has occurred, such as a formation of a gas or precipitate, change in pH, and other pieces of evidence.
