March 18

Today in science 8, students reviewed the comparisons and contrasts between asexual and sexual reproduction, including the different advantages and disadvantages of each. Afterwards, students learned that mitosis is the equivalent of asexual reproduction on a cellular level, and we learned from Cells Alive that the different stages of mitosis (division of the DNA) are quick, and they flow into one another. Most of a cell’s life is spent in interphase, replicating DNA and organelles, but mitosis is the short time period where DNA is being divided equally between the two new cells. For homework, students will complete the Mitosis Worksheet and Diagram Identification.

Integrated Science students today reviewed their homework from yesterday, which was to make the Lewis Dot structures for elements 3-10 on the periodic table. After this, we spent some time working on a packet to get to know the periodic table a bit better. This Periodic Table activity 2    helped students get to know where the metals, metalloids, and nonmetals are on the periodic table, as well as become familiar with some of the different properties of groups IA-VIIIA.
