February 22

Today in class, students in integrated worked on the Solubility Curve Online Lab. Beforehand, students also discussed why adding salt to water changes the melting and boiling points of water. Essentially, it’s another molecule to change the shape (chemical potential energy) of the other molecules. Students will complete the lab tomorrow in class.

Students in science 8 continued work on the Fossil lab 2016. Students in period 6 and 7 also received a Fossil lab Dates Cheat Sheet 2016 to help them determine the rock layer age ranges. For rock layer environments, the fossils can act as clues as to what type of environment there was in the past (aquatic or terrestrial). For the age ranges, students should look at the date ranges of all the fossils in a particular rock layer and then choose the smallest left number and the biggest right number. Take for example a rock layer had the following 3 fossils:

Or       450-350 mya
Az       400-340 mya
G        390-330 mya

In this example, the smallest left number would be 390 and the largest number on the right would be 350 mya. Therefore, the range of when the rock layer formed would be 390-350 mya.
